IB Diploma Programme: 10 reasons why it is the ideal preparation for University

IB Diploma Programme

The IB Diploma Programme aims to train students in intellectual, physical, emotional and ethical excellence

The IB Diploma Programme (International Baccalaureate) is a curriculum made up of different subjects and aimed at students between the ages of 16 and 19. The programme aims to train students in intellectual, physical, emotional and ethical excellence — not simply in the acquisition of knowledge through repetition.

At Elian’s British School of La Nucía we have attained IB school status, which means we can deliver the IB Diploma Programme. This is a great achievement for us, as we believe this programme gives our pupils the best possible preparation for a successful future at university for a number of reasons:

1. More and better academic opportunities

Research has shown that students who study under the IB Diploma Programme have a better chance of getting into the best and most prestigious institutions of higher education than those with other qualifications. Not only that, but they are also more likely to graduate with the highest grades, and want to continue their studies.

2. Excellence goes beyond the classroom

The IB Diploma Programme’s approach is not just about giving students information and facts, but goes far beyond that, by aiming to develop creative, emotional, ethical and intellectual skills. A high value is also placed on positive community actions, which encourage them to become more caring and humane individuals.

3. Security and independence as a basis

In the IB Diploma Programme, students are expected to work independently, which develops  their self-reliance. Support from teachers is always there when needed, but it is offered with a light touch, to avoid the pupil becoming complacent and irresolute.

4. Possibility of an international future

The IB Diploma Programme enjoys global recognition, which means students have unprecedented freedom to pursue their university studies abroad, if they wish to do so. Because of its status, the Diploma Programme allows them access to the most prestigious universities in the world.

5. The beginning of a global mindset

Languages are a key part of the IB Diploma Programme, with students aiming to master several languages in addition to their mother tongue. This gives them the ability to move fluently between different linguistic groups on the international scene. Integrated with the DP, we continue to offer the necessary preparation for language certification in English, Spanish and German.

6. Critical thinking and communication

It is not only important to know how to form one’s own opinion on a subject, but also to convey it effectively, and in the IB Diploma Programme, students are encouraged to acquire the necessary skills to achieve this.

7. Time management from the start

As we work to develop our students’ autonomy, we encourage them to organise their own studies so they can also develop other aspects of their lives and interests.

8. Understanding, rather than learning by rote

In the IB Diploma Programme examinations, students are not only tested on their ability to recall facts, but also on their ability to understand and apply what they have learned.

9. An approach where knowledge is connected

The IB Diploma Programme connects subjects across the curriculum, so students perceive the different disciplines as parts of a whole and gain an understanding of how they interact in the real world. In this way we ensure they value all branches of knowledge.

10. Student choice as a core value

Students can choose between different subject areas according to their preferences and tastes, so they can develop their knowledge of the topics that most motivate them. Students select 6 subjects from the 14 we offer.
