We are very happy to announce that Elian’s British School of La Nucía has become one of more than 5,000 schools worldwide that are part of the International Baccalaureate programme. Being an IB school and joining this community of schools is demanding, as there are a number of requirements to be met. But the effort and dedication has been worth it, because now we can raise the quality of our education even higher and further empower our students to make the most of their future.
What does it mean to be an IB school?
The International Baccalaureate is an educational foundation that has achieved worldwide prestige, thanks to the quality of its learning programmes and quality assessment methods. In short, the IB is a leading educational institution that has joined forces with schools, international organisations and governments.
To become an IB school, we have to implement IB educational programmes, pedagogy, methods and procedures. These have the ultimate goal of creating a better world through active education that fosters respect, solidarity and peace.
There are four skills that IB educational programmes develop:
- social skills
- intellectual skills
- emotional skills
- personal skills
As a result of Elian’s British School of La Nucía being accepted as an IB school, we can implement a progressive, international style of education that is recognised worldwide.
Benefits of IB for schools
Being an IB school gives us additional access to:
- high quality educational programmes for all age groups, aimed at creating well-informed and eager learners.
- professional development programmes for teachers that aim to empower them and enhance their skills.
- the privilege of being independent and therefore able to adopt the most effective educational practices, irrespective of party political ideology. The IB incorporates best practice into its programmes from different educational frameworks around the world.
- the ability to adapt the IB programme according to our school’s specific culture, context and needs, as well as the interests and abilities of individual students.
Advantages of the IB for students
Above all, the IB differs from other educational programmes in that one of the main pillars of its philosophy is independent, critical thinking, with its programme focused on students learning to question and generate their own ideas.
According to one study, students who are educated in IB programmes:
- perform better academically
- finish university studies earlier than their peers
- are better prepared to undertake high level research
- manage their time more effectively
- cope better with demanding workloads
Moreover, one of the central themes of an IB education is that learning skills in mathematics, writing, reading, music, history or biology, is just as important as developing social awareness.
