“Almost all the good things that happen in the world are born out of an attitude of appreciation for others”, Dalai Lama.
This sums up two of the basic pillars of education at Elian’s British School of La Nucia: cooperation and teamwork. We believe that from an early age, children should be aware of the importance of helping others, and that a prosperous society is one that looks after the welfare of all. For our students, taking part in social actions is both energising and rewarding.
Cooperation and teamwork: core values
The most inspiring professionals not only have admirable technical and organisational skills, but also a strong sense of their own and other people’s humanity. The attributes we want our students to develop include their human and caring instincts, as well as an ability to understand their importance as members of society. That’s why we encourage students to take an active role in initiating and coordinating social actions, as well as taking part in them.
Move Your Feet Project (2022-2023)
A long-term project of which we are particularly proud involves a partnership between our students and those of the CEE Raquel Payá school in Denia, which is for children with disabilities.
The students have put in place a number of fundraising initiatives to buy mobility aids. So far, they have raised a total of €4,000 for the purchase of a Myway harness, which increases sensory feedback and dampens involuntary movements, and an Upsee Mobility harness — a vertical mobility device for children with disabilities. Seeing our students so actively and dedicatedly involved in building a better world has been an inspiration.
Student Council: the source of it all
Our Student Council, which is entirely made up of pupils chosen by their peers, leads all the school charity campaigns. By being a part of the council, our students learn important skills, including teamwork, public speaking and organisation.
Here are some of the most prominent actions they’ve put together in the 2022-2023 academic year.
La Nucía Animal Protection Campaign (2023)
Our students created an action plan to raise funds and awareness for this local animal protection charity. These included:
- One of the abandoned dogs being sponsored by the school.
- Talks given by volunteers from the animal shelter.
- Sale of charity calendars.
- Collection of basic necessities for the shelter animals.
Campaign against cancer (2023)
The Student Council came up with a range of artistic and sporting activities for this campaign. One of these was the friendly volleyball tournament on San Juan de Alicante beach involving students from Year 7 to 10, in which donations were made to the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC). In addition, the students also organised:
- The sale of “Baby Pelones” to raise money for JUEGATERAPIA, a charitable foundation that fights cancer.
- A sponsored walk to raise funding for the AECC.
- A talk to 8-year-old pupils, entitled “Everything cancer means” by the psychologist, Jorge Romero from the AECC in Alicante.
- As part of the action against cancer, we also organised a blood donation session.
We are a candidate school for IB
Our school is in the process of implementing the IB Diploma Programme — but what does this mean?
The International Baccalaureate is an internationally recognised educational programme that seeks to develop students’ academic, intellectual and personal skills. The IB Diploma Programme is one of the programmes offered by the International Baccalaureate Organisation and is aimed at students between the ages of 16 and 19.
Being an IB applicant school entails the provision of an education based on the principles and educational approaches of the International Baccalaureate. This includes an interdisciplinary approach, fostering critical and creative thinking skills, promoting intercultural understanding and developing life skills.
In short, it is another demonstration of our commitment to an internationally recognised educational approach.
